This is an opposite slotted 2x4 Automatic Binding Brick, ABB, bslot04a w/ no logo released in 1949. Automatic Binding Bricks were the first bricks ever released by LEGO®. The first ABB's did not even have the LEGO® logo on them. The logo was not added to the bricks until 1953.
ABB’s were slotted for doors and windows and made of Cellulose Acetate, CA. Cellulose Acetate was unstable and often led to warping so LEGO replaced it with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) in 1963. The slotted bricks were last released in 1955 in the Mosaik set # 1300.
These ABB's are hollow on bottom, without tubes. Tubes were not added to the bottom of bricks until 1958.
The ABB branding evolved into LEGO® Mursten in 1953.
ABB’s were available in Red, White, Yellow, Light Green, and Medium Blue. However, Marbled bricks were made using plastic pellets that would be leftover at the end of a run. The pellets were mixed together to make the bricks look marbled. These were sold by LEGO® as factory seconds for half the price of a regular brick.
